…how the factions of Russian power can displace Putin, to preserve their positions, before this grinding, obviously failing war collapses the system they depend on.
This is the only ending to the war I expect.
But I hope the powers that be, remove Putin too late to stabilize their plutocratic oligarchy. Because the now growing “Rospartizen” umbrella organization including liberal democratic movements, may become strong enough to take over the streets and overcome the enforcers of their oppression.
Putin’s ex-speechwriter (circa 2008-10) reminds us of the abdication of Czar Nicholas II on March 15, 1917, and of former Moscow Mayor and then anti-establishment President of the Russian Republic, Boris Yeltsin’s spontaneous success in overcoming the “Gang of Eight” illegal coup against Gorbachev in 1991.
The bbc.com link below, describes the events of that day, August 18, 1991, when one of the key men, Soviet Army Major Sergey Yevdokimov, was persuaded to enter the “White House” Parliament building to talk with Yeltsin.
When Major Yevdokimov emerged, he ordered the six tanks of his sub-unit tank battalion command, surrounding the building, to rotate the tanks away from facing the building, so that their gun barrels faced outward in protection of the building. It was then that Boris Yeltsin’s iconic photographs were taken of him speaking, standing on top of a tank. This article also contains a video ofretired Yevdokimov, reflecting on the hopes he had for those days:
