An adult Bald eagle, cruising over Lake Estes. It's a majestic BIF (Bird in Flight) and symbol for America.
The Colorado State Open Thread is first and foremost, a place to come and share any thoughts that are on your mind this evening or tomorrow morning, which, if you’re reading this on Tuesday morning, would actually be This morning, and you can’t just go back in time and post comments earlier than right NOW, but if you can post your thoughts last night, we should, er, maybe talk?
Well, the season for political ads is on TV. I realize there are probably many readers who are streaming their idiot-box offerings but if you’re like we are in this house, with a DVR with a fast forward, or you’re watching live broadcasts like Broncos games and you’re looking forward to the commercials because the game is so excruciatingly boring and the commercials are the only interesting parts, you get to see commercials aimed at ripping apart political opponents, mis-stating or downright lying about either what one candidate promises to do if you just give them your vote or what the other candidate has lied about — either they lied about their own record or they lied about their opponent’s record.
I haven’t seen any debates this year (though I did read about the Boebert-Frisch debate debacle) — so I went to the Intertubes and found this site coloradosun.com/…, which lists debates for state and federal offices. The dates and locations of debates (there were only two federal districts — 7 and 8, listed) are there and include information to listen or watch the debates. Years ago, I went to downtown Denver to watch Senator Udall debate Corey Gardner, but it was not a great time. They spent a lot of time not directly answering questions and reciting prepared lines. Gardner was worse, but Senator Udall didn’t knock it out of the park either. I hope those of you who do watch debates get better shows this time.
I am very much looking forward to the election season being over so that we can get on with the business of either celebrating victories by Democrats and the preservation of the Colorado and national legislative and executive branches of government or the period of mourning for the United States and its end as a country we want to live in. I am very tired of getting multiple texts per day from or for Mark Kelly in Arizona, begging for money, and while I’ve sent money to his campaign and several others both in Colorado and across the country, I am constantly annoyed that responding “STOP” does nothing to get me off their pester lists. Yes, it’s a close race. Yes, it’s very important to keep him in the Senate. Yes, I don’t like the image I have of him as being an aggressive fundraiser instead of hearing how he’s helping Arizonans. Are the rest of you being pestered to extremes by politicians? I haven’t figured out how to get off lists once I’m on them.
Don’t you want Milo to be your pawsonal repwesentative? Won’t you send me five cans of Fancy Feast?
This has been a very mild fall in this area of Colorado. It has been very dry, but other than a few mornings with very light frost, we haven’t even started to worry about snow and ice. How about in your areas of the state?
We had some neighbors over for drinks yesterday afternoon. He’s 87 and she’s 85 and they’re both on their second marriages, with kids, inlaws, grandrelatives and even great grandrelatives scattered across the country. Their winter home is in Fort Myers, Florida, and they had flooding but apparently the house is damaged but still standing after Hurricane Ian. We enjoyed talking with them and it was nice to talk to an 85 year old progressive firebrand (he’s not that politically riled up). Estes Park is purple, but I get the feeling there are a number of conservatives here, in part because they have money and they’ve been conditioned to the idea that Republicans are going to help them keep their money. There are many problems with that idea, but that’s for another day and column.
Longtime readers may remember that I’m a big college sports fan, especially football and basketball. This coming weekend, I’m headed off to see some real quality college football instead of the quality displayed by CSU and CU. For Colorado State’s first game, they traveled to the University of Michigan’s “Big House” to play in front of 110,000 fans. CSU got beaten fairly badly (51-7). I’ll be there this weekend to watch my Michigan Wolverines host the Penn State Nittany Lions. I hope Michigan wins in a similar fashion. We’ll see in next Monday’s open thread how I’m feeling. I’m going with a friend (my dog groomer) and two of his sons who are starting to consider college. Go Blue!
What is on your minds this evening? Do you all have your plans for voting and helping your neighbors and friends vote? Do you have any special fall festivals in your towns? Do you have any travel plans? I look forward to your comments. The floor is yours...
