In honor of Indigenous Peoples’ Day tomorrow, our new projects are intended to help classrooms in areas with many Native students. They’re big projects, too, and that is a deliberate choice. You know we’d like to have a big celebration when we fund 1,000 projects, but many of us are busy now with election-focused activities and donations. I talked this over with nomandates, who is up to her neck in Texas GOTV, and we decided we will celebrate 1,000 projects on November 13, the Sunday after Election Day, assuming we reach 1,000 before then. (We’re at 997 now, and even with projects of this size, we’re reasonably likely to complete three in five weeks.) So in order to minimize the time lag between completion and celebration, I’m taking the opportunity to put up some bigger projects than we would usually pick.

The tiny town of Sasakwa, Oklahoma is part of the Seminole Nation. Ms. Sanders’ project is running out of time to get her first-graders some resources to help them with math skills, so we’re going to pitch in.

PROJECT #1 Project: Algorithmic Classroom Elegance Resources: Help me give my students a classroom that embraces mathematics and creates an aesthetically pleasing classroom that introduces students to the magnificence of math. Economic need: An Equity Focus School; nearly all students from low‑income households. Location: Sasakwa School, Sasakwa, Oklahoma Total: $414.44 Still Needed: $ 364.44 $250.91 Project description by Ms. Sanders: In first grade students are so excited and eager to learn. My students will have various ways of processing and learning mathematical information. The items that I have chosen for them will assist in with all learning styles. I have chosen several appealing visual aids that will promote mathematical awareness and create a love of numerical learning for beginning learners. These items will allow my students to see various presentations of mathematical concepts like telling time, counting money, skip counting, tracking the number of days using place value and many other skills that will be practiced daily during our morning meetings. I will provide my students with a variety of daily math practices that will focus on the skills that will be covered each week. I know that each of these items will assist my students in reaching their highest learning capabilities. DONATE HERE Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference! I thought rather than a few clips of math games, we could see something about the people instead. x x YouTube Video

St. John, North Dakota is just a few miles from the Canadian border. It’s a majority-Native town just outside the border of the Turtle Mountain Reservation, belonging to the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa people. Ms. Davis wants her second-graders to be able to use the 3D “pens” we’ve seen before to bring their creative ideas into being.

PROJECT #2 Project: Imagination Is Neverending Resources: Help me give my students the 3Doodler to have a creative mind, a sense of pride, and self-esteem, as students become true makers and innovators. Economic need: An Equity Focus School; nearly all students from low‑income households. Location: St. John School, St. John, North Dakota Total: $791.44 Still Needed: $ 611.44 $542.91 Project description by Ms. Davis: Ideas that result from free exploration are where learning naturally happens. Although direct instruction is necessary, students are much more likely to enjoy adding and subtracting when they can create their own counting sticks or doodle illustrations for tangible word problems. The 3Doodler allows students to share their ideas in concrete and visual ways. A student's imagination can be infinite when they are allowed to use their hands to create projects to better serve their learning. All ideas students have can and will be created with a 3Doodler pen. My students could create, design, and invent. DONATE HERE Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference! Turtle Mountain people don’t have a very happy story, to the surprise of none of us. x x YouTube Video

I was rather surprised, but very pleased, that both our projects from last week were completed, even the big one! Project #1, People That Make An Impact!: Ms. White wanted her Nevada middle school students to read biographies of inspiring people, including some they could identify with. She writes: Thank you for your generous donation and commitment to education. These books and materials will work to inspire my students to dream big! The hands-on materials will allow them to bring their dreams to life by creating models of ideas represented in the texts. Again, thank you for your generosity! Project #2, Math Centers: Ms. Llanas needed help developing bilingual math materials for her San Antonio kindergarteners. She writes: Thank you so much for your generous donations! These math centers are going to be a big help and a huge hit with my students. They will allow them to practice their math skills while having fun learning. I am really excited to see their reactions when the items arrive.

DonorsChoose has developed the designation Equity Focus Schools to describe some schools that submit projects. They meet two criteria: at least 50% of students are Black, Latinx, Native American, Pacific Islander, or multiracial, and at least 50% of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, the standard measure for school economic need. You can read more at the link about their efforts to address the longstanding inequity in education.

Founded in 2009, The Inoculation Project combats the anti-science, anti-education push in conservative America by funding science, math, and literacy projects in red-state public school classrooms and libraries. Our conduit is DonorsChoose, a crowdfunding charity founded in 2000 and highly rated by both Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau.

Every Sunday, we focus on helping to fund projects in neighborhood public schools where the overwhelming majority of students come from low-income households. We welcome everyone who supports public school education — no money is required!

Finally, here’s our list of successfully funded projects — our series total is 997! The success-list diary also contains links and additional information about DonorsChoose.
