The scandal surrounding the Republican Senate nominee for Georgia, Herschel Walker, continues to grow. Walker, who is accused of paying for his then-girlfriend’s abortion in 2009, and urging her to have a second abortion, has continued to deny the allegations, or that he even knows the woman. On Friday, Walker said he had only just learnt of the woman’s identity. Renowned polling firm, FiveThirtyEight, believes that control over the Senate will be decided by who wins in Georgia , so this scandal, with its allegations of hypocrisy, and lies, distills the contest between Republicans and Democrats.

Walker says that the as-yet-unidentified women first mentioned the abortion to him and his wife, Julie, on Friday. Julie had been texting with the woman throughout the day, according to The Daily Beast . Walker’s position has evolved now, and from denying that the abortion took place, he said, on Friday, that, “I’m not saying she did or didn’t have one. I’m saying I don’t know anything about that. I don’t know.” The woman claims that when she had a second pregnancy by Walker, he urged her to have a second abortion, but that time, she decided against it. The woman wrote to Julie, saying, “He brought all of this on himself when he decided to get on a platform and denounce abortion and make a mockery of his children who have done NOTHING to deserve this”.

Walker has always been a flawed candidate, but this scandal is a window into the kind of man that he is. He has publicly come out against abortion, and portrayed himself as being a family man, but as we have discussed before, he is far from that. Walker is typical of the Republican establishment. All they care about is power. Ethics be damned. We have heard on countless occasions how Republican elites have been horrified by Donald Trump, and yet, in pursuit of power, they have backed him. Republican politics is all about the pretense of values driven politics, but at its heart, it is about the accumulation of power. Walker was in favor of abortion when it suited his ends, and when it didn’t, when he needed to win an election, he suddenly became anti-abortion, and pro-family. None of his children or family know this transformed man who is running for office. Every scandal has come from outside his camp. He has never willingly owned his past. That is not the mark of a man who sincerely holds to certain values. That is the mark of a man who, like the typical Republican politician, espouses values only to win votes. Power is the only value Republicans believe in.
