Project Nexus — Solar Canals
Researchers at UC Santa Cruz and UC Merced last year collaborated in a study published in Nature Sustainability converting the state’s public water distribution system to a network of “solar canals” which would conserve water while boosting the state’s clean renewable energy portfolio. The work, called Project Nexus will begin in 2023.
x Turlock Irrigation District (@TurlockID) in #California is about to launch an experiment, called #ProjectNexus, to cover canals and aqueducts with solar panels.

The research suggests that covering all of California’s canals – spanning roughly 4,000 miles – with solar panels could save up to 63 billion gallons of water and generate 13 gigawatts of renewable power annually. One gigawatt is equal to the energy consumption of 100 million LEDs, or as others put it, enough to power 750,000 homes. www.pbs.org/...
Zero Emission Trucks
Clean Truck Fund (CTF). The Port of Los Angeles has announced the release of $5 million in voucher incentives for zero-emission trucks to operate at the Port. This marks the first in a series of incentive programs that will be funded by the Port’s recently enacted(CTF).
“Our port does more than drive America’s economy forward – it shows the world how environmental stewardship and economic prosperity can go hand-in-hand,” said Los Angles Mayor Eric Garcetti. “As we continue to move record cargo, the need for zero-emission solutions has never been more clear – and working in partnership with the California Air Resources Board, we will continue to forge ahead with our work to clean our air and accelerate our transition to zero-emission technologies.”
“We’re pleased to start investing the Clean Truck Fund dollars that we’ve been collecting since April and use them toward a zero-emissions future,” said Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka. “This is the first of many funding initiatives that the Port of Los Angeles has planned as we help begin the transition to the cleanest trucks in the world.”
x At the #PortofLA, we’re moving toward a zero-emission future. Globally, we’re partnering with ports and cities around the world to create the world’s first transpacific green shipping corridor. We are committed to leading the way to decarbonize the supply chain. #WorldMaritimeDay pic.twitter.com/yeQ4eR0ZMH — Port of Los Angeles (@PortofLA) September 29, 2022
