Blocked or missing the real reason?

Before bed last night (approximately 10pm eastern), as I often do, I checked on dailykos via ipad for the latest and greatest but it did not connect. I know that’s no big deal as it could be one of a dozen issues and I went to sleep. Starting at about 6:30 this morning, neither my ipad nor my phone would connect (although all other services and sites were fine) and I thought it odd enough that I starting playing around with my devices and connections. I cleared caches, reset my router and it was only when I turned off the wifi on my phone that I was able to make contact with y’all.

What???

I reconnected my phone to my wifi and activated the VPN: success. With the VPN off: no connection.

Super curious, I then opened my laptop and had the same result: with VPN I could connect, without it I could not. Screen shots from the laptop with VPN connection on and off are below (no judgement on the age of my system nor the visible shortcuts please).

My ISP is out of PA called Armstrong that somehow managed to get the exclusivity in my area (NE Ohio) way back when and we have no choice but to use them, service levels be damned. I attempted to call them about this matter but wait times are 1 hour+ today (not uncommon) so I settled for a Facebook message as well as a Twitter DM and am awaiting their response.

I’ve searched their website and the used the google but can’t find a published (or even acknowledged) blacklist or a statement that says they may block sites — only some help pages on what to do if no connection.

The cynic in me says this is a new front in the right wing attack as Armstrong’s chairman is a clear Repub supporter having donated at least $86,000 in 2016 to various causes. But before I start getting all righteous and paranoid I thought this group may have some ideas. Am I missing something technical / obvious with the interwebs or do I have a real problem. Anyone else?
