My nephew's oldest child, Faith, just turned 21. Recently she announced that she is disgusted with Republicans and Democrats. Therefore she won't be voting in the upcoming Midterm Elections. Faith is a Black lesbian, an atheist, and a progressive feminist. Yet she is going to waste this opportunity to protect her future.
My heart breaks at the thought of her silenced voice. Here's my message to Faith and other disaffected members of Generation Z:
This year, more than ever, the elections are about ideas rather than the candidates. So if you're disgusted with the candidates, just vote the issues.
Vote the Blue Ballot and maybe the world can be a better place. Vote the Red Ballot (or not at all) and find out just how bad things can get.
Democrats stand for LGBTQ rights and inclusion. Republicans want to regulate LGBTQ people and exclude them.
Democrats believe in marriage equality. Republicans believe that marriage is a sacred institution between one man and one woman (at a time).
Democrats support women's reproductive rights. Republicans want a national ban on abortion. Plus they're threatening to outlaw contraceptives.
Democrats want to address climate change. Republicans deny that climate change is caused by human activity.
Democrats want to protect the environment. Republicans want to exploit the environment.
Democrats want everyone to have health insurance. Republicans continue to challenge and try to repeal the Affordable Care Act.
Democrats want to outlaw assault weapons and high capacity magazines. Republicans continue to fight for individual gun ownership with few or no restrictions.
Democrats believe in voting rights. Republicans keep finding ways to restrict voting rights in ways that adversely impact people of color, students, the elderly, and the poor.
Democrats call the January 6 uprising an act of insurrection. Republicans see it as a freedom fight.
Democrats want the super rich to pay their fair share of taxes. Republicans will continue to pass laws that favor the wealthy.
Democrats want to provide immigrants with a pathway to citizenship. Republicans want to deport undocumented immigrants and restrict immigration from certain areas of the world (i.e. Muslims and people of color).
Democrats keep religion out of government. Republicans keep insinuating Christianity into our laws.
Democrats want to prosecute Trump for various crimes and prevent him from ever again holding office. The Republican base wants Trump to take the presidency again.
Democrats come in all colors and styles. The Republican party is home to white supremacists.
Democrats support and defend the Constitution. Republicans want to overthrow the Constitution in favor of an autocratic theocracy.
This list is not exhaustive. Nevertheless, it should give you an idea of what's at stake.
Together we can fight for our Democracy. Please vote on or before November 8.
