Many commentators have correctly observed that “Judge” Aileen Cannon’s decisions to date in the Mar-A-Lago side show proceeding have established that she is completely unfit to serve as a judge at any level. They have also noted that whatever reputation she may have had as an honest, unbiased jurist has been destroyed. Last week’s outrageous decision further cemented the accuracy of those observations. However, those observations presuppose that she actually cares about the constitution, the legal system, justice and her reputation with respect to those quaint concepts.

Unfortunately, I believe that presupposition is incorrect. Don’t get me wrong: Cannon does care about her reputation. However, the reputation about which she cares is the reputation that she is completely beholden to Donald Trump and the RepubliQanon Party and that she will do anything and make any ruling to serve their interests. She wants to make it clear that she is already bought and paid for: whatever constitutional provisions, whatever laws, whatever precedents exist that conflict with the immediate interests of Trump and the RepubliQanons will be ignored or denied by her.

Why does she want to do that? Of course, there is the fundamental principle that she wants to do her part to install a far-right wing RepubliQanon authoritarian government. However, it appears that she has in mind an even larger personal goal than that. Even that system will most likely want to maintain a pretense of compliance with the Constitution and its three-branch separation of powers, including a Supreme Court. One of the most sought-after goals in the legal profession is to become a justice on that Court. By burnishing her reputation that she is completely beholden to Trump and the RepubliQanons, Cannon is attempting to pave her path to that goal.

The RepubliQanon Party has already established, through its placement of Amy Boney Carrot on the Court, that experience, intelligence and integrity are not required. The only qualification is absolute fealty to their agenda. Whereas the RepubliQanons had to at least maintain a pretense of adherence to the Constitution and the rule of law during Boney Carrot’s confirmation hearing, Cannon is doing everything she can to make it clear that, with her, there will be no need to maintain such a pretense.

If Trump and the RepubliQanons succeed in stealing the presidency and the Senate in 2024 and a Supreme Court seat opens up, who are they going to call? Cannon wants it to be her.
