"All forms of energy are destined to degrade and fall apart." --Professor Jim Al-Khalili
It is a given that it is dangerous to try to explain something one doesn’t understand oneself. But, heh heh heh, I like living dangerously. All the while mitigating risk, of course.
I’m enamored of the world of physics. There is reality, and nothing else. If it’s real, then it’s a part of the natural universe. Anything else is make-believe.
One very simple question: How did we get here?
Morning Open Thread is a daily, copyrighted post from a host of editors and guest writers. We support our community, invite and share ideas, and encourage thoughtful, respectful dialogue in an open forum. This is a post where you can come to share what’s on your mind and stay for the expansion. The diarist is on California time and gets to take a nap when he needs to, or may just wander off and show up again later. So you know, it's a feature, not a bug. Grab your supportive indulgence(s) of choice and join us, please. And if you’re brand new to Morning Open Thread, then Hail and Well Met, new Friend.
A simple system, one that’s based on simple rules with feedback, produces both chaos and order:
You can find the entire film on Magellan TV, or maybe get lucky somewhere else, but here are a few sound bites (in text) from the opening that I find utterly compelling.
..inanimate matter, with no purpose or design, can spontaneously create exquisite beauty...
..the same laws, that make the universe chaotic and unpredictable, can turn simple dust into human beings…
..there is a strange and unexpected relationship between order and chaos…
In 1952 Alan Turing published The Chemical Basis of Morphogenesis. In this paper Turing described, for the first time ever, a mathematical explanation of how a living process, a biological system, could self-organize. Turing’s equations described something quite familiar but that had not been thought of before in the context of biology. His equations showed how chemical reactions surrounding and affecting an embryo could result in all the differentiated body cells; organs, muscles, skin, hair, and body markings, such as the spots on leopards and cows.

And that’s as far as I can go. I just don’t understand it well enough to try to explain further. Instead, enjoy some photos I recently took.
