The roll-out of the covid vaccines in Florida may be a precursor to the relief effort from Hurricane Ian. They could determine the fate of elections in Florida, and thus, possibly the nation. The questions are these: are there any reasons to believe that the DeSantis administration will not funnel relief funds first to richer, Republican areas? Then, will this be obvious enough to cause a political backlash?
While I certainly hope that those who need help in Florida most, will get help most and soonest, that is not the history of the DeSantis administration. He uses his office to create goodwill among his supporters, not as they say, to lift all boats equally. Quite obviously, the first to receive help will be grateful. One would expect them to view the administration who delivers this help as both compassionate and effective. That would be a good reason to vote for DeSantis.
On the other hand, with approximately one month until the elections, those who need, but do not receive help will have other motivations. Survival efforts will be the priority. Voting maybe, will not seem as important to those still seeking a roof over their head, electricity, or running water. Thus, voting among the neglected may drop. Unless, of course, anger becomes a motivation for political backlash.
Now, citizens in the poorer communities often do not know what is happening in the richer communities. Certainly, if you are trying to put a roof over your head while you tear out your flood-damaged walls, you do not have a lot of time to look around to see how your richer neighbors might be doing.
Someone, or several someones, however, should be doing just that. Will the reporting community do so? Possibly, they will. Then again, maybe not.
Were I a Democratic Party leader in Florida, I would assign staff both to help out in the most impacted communities and to keep an eye on where the relief moneys go. Trust everyone, as they say, but cut the cards.
