Early September. I had someone drop off some campaign literature on the front door knob yesterday. He had a blue hat that said “Elect John Weinrich” and as far as I could tell, was probably the candidate himself. I perused the colorful campaign literature that included how he has been a local realtor for years, and how his family lives in the community. But I couldn’t find his party affiliation anywhere on the document. I’ve noticed this on yard signs, candidates rely on name recognition and don’t advertise their political party. John’s family is famous for a bakery in a nearby town that’s served the community for generations and people traveling on the regional rail see their sign every time they pass by.

I remembered him stopping by the house during a previous election cycle, after George W. had soiled the Republican brand with his lying us into war and other things. John told us he was running as a Democrat. I found out much later that the “Democrats” elected to Borough Council were actually Republicans that changed their party affiliation.

I couldn’t help but see the similarity of John’s hat to the red ones worn by countless people who worship the former president. It didn’t take long with a search online, to find out that Mr. Weinrich is running for State Representative as a Republican candidate.

When I went to their FB page, there was Mr. Weinrich with his gleaming smile. I saw the rest of the slate as well. Of course, at the top of the list was Doug Mastriano who recently declared that when he was elected Governor he would “Turn Pennsylvania into Another Florida.” He doesn’t do interviews with the “non-Christian media” and most recently revealed he has a “Campaign Prophet” with a hotline to God.

I had to ask myself why a candidate for State Senate would not put his party affiliation on his campaign literature, and walk around with a blue hat with his name on it. The FB page proclaimed Republicans wanted to get everyone on board the “Red Wave” and “Only You Can Make it Happen!” So, first of all why would someone on the “Red Team” be wearing a blue “Elect Me” hat?

Secondly, if I wanted to waste any more mental energy on this it would be to ask Mr. Weinrich, “Do you believe the 2020 election was stolen?” Then I would want to know if he thinks Doug Mastriano even deserves to be a candidate for office, given his participation in January 6. And, are you behind Dr. Oz? He used his in-laws’ address a few miles from our community to instantly become a Pennsylvania resident. He is a physician who has endorsed snake oil remedies and mocks the health challenges of his opponent!

I know you’re a local realtor with deep roots in the community, and your kids took swimming lessons at the YMCA and all that, but if you’re on Team Red you signed on to a whole lot of stuff that I don’t find palatable. And if you think that “semi-facsist” remark the President made recently gives you some wiggle room, and your blue hat implies that “I’m not really like them,” you can forget it. There’s no “semi” about it. The so-called party you represent wants nothing more than to turn our country into a fascist dictatorship.
