Few of us are able to illustrate our own works, other than perhaps a map. Art is an entirely separate skill from writing! And photography gives us only real things, not the people and situations we are writing about.

Sometimes when an artist is asked to produce illos, they get it all wrong.

There are even websites

seriously, this you gotta see

of hilariously wrong book covers like this one.

And don’t even get me started on movies based on books. They range from outstanding to horrible.

But visuals can convey a great deal of information quickly if they match the story.

A sequence from The Return of the King absolutely gives me chills, it is so perfect. It takes more time than reading the words, but is great film-making.

So, let’s match the story to the visuals instead. What is happening here? Pick a picture and take off from there. Use it as a setting, a story trope, pick a character. Let’s not go so far as a thousand words unless you get on a roll, maybe keep it to 300 or less.

and for the science and sci-fi minded:

x The misconception that there is no sound in space originates because most space is a ~vacuum, providing no way for sound waves to travel. A galaxy cluster has so much gas that we've picked up actual sound. Here it's amplified, and mixed with other data, to hear a black hole! pic.twitter.com/RobcZs7F9e — NASA Exoplanets (@NASAExoplanets) August 21, 2022
