The sheriff of Lee County, Florida, Carmine Marceno, reports hundreds may have died in the Fort Myers area due to Hurricane Ian even though there were numerous warnings to evacuate, including from President Joe Biden.
Many low lying areas appear to have been swamped by a storm surge of at least seven feet from the Gulf of Mexico. Hurricane Ian came ashore as a Category 4 storm, nearly strong enough to be a Category 5.
Lee County includes the seaside communities of Fort Myers, Fort Myers Beach, Cape Coral, Captiva Island, and Sanibel Island.
