On Sunday, California joined four other U.S. states in making “natural organic reduction” a legal alternative to cremation and casket burial. You could become part of the Earth as human compost soil.
USA Today reports that Gov. Gavin Newsom’s signature of Assembly Bill 351 cleared a path for California to join Oregon, Washington, Colorado, and Vermont in a new and more environmentally sustainable alternative to the usual methods used after death.
“AB 351 will provide an additional option for California residents that is more environmentally friendly and gives them another choice for burial,” said California Assemblymember Cristina Garcia, who drafted the bill. “With climate change and sea-level rise as very real threats to our environment, this is an alternative method of final disposition that won’t contribute emissions into our atmosphere.”
Human composting usually involves placing human remains inside an insulated vessel, along with organic materials (wood chips, alfalfa, and other biodegradable matter) designed to expedite the decomposition process, which takes 30 to 45 days.
