Do some Daily Kos commenters believe we are Alex Jones? I think we are better than this. [1]

I don’t want to write this diary. I didn’t want to write ANY diaries since my series on Warner Discovery and David Zaslav proved too polarizing. But I’m really upset. And if you guys think I’m overreacting let me know and I’ll delete the diary. But I am very upset and disturbed and maybe I can give you my reasoning and we can sort of work it out.

On Monday Charles Jay wrote a diary detailing how a Swastika wearing gunman walked into a school in central Russia and killed 17 kids and then took his own life.

Pretty grim, tragic, and frankly straightforward story. We’ve been through this enough times in America.

So I was disturbed and disgusted to see that a TON of commenters immediately raised the idea that this was some sort of false-flag operation from Putin. Forget the fact that the idea is bullshit because it doesn’t fit the facts. The truth is the commenters raising the theory didn’t see the tragedy of 17 children dying. They didn’t seem to matter. Their deaths were immediately used by several commenters in the thread as a political prop. What I saw in those “theories” was a profound lack of empathy, and people cynically trying to figure out how this senseless crime could benefit them politically. And these exact same people will turn around and call Alex Jones a monster without seeing the contradiction.

I am not a person who believes in “When they go low, we go high.” That’s how we lose. But there has to be a limit. I will fight monsters with every method legally available to me. But I’m not looking to turn into one. Especially not for something like mere political convenience.

Have I read the situation wrong? If so, let me know what those false-flag theories actually mean for the integrity of Daily Kos. I currently find them indefensible. Right now I’m disgusted and don’t know what else to do than write this diary.
