They say those who can't learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Which begs the question - what happens if you are ignoring the lessons right in front of your eyes in real time?
While looking for something else, I ran across an episode of John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight from February 13, 2017. At this point Trump had only been in the White House a bare few weeks — but already it was becoming clear that Trump and Reality had very little to do with each other. In the space of not quite 24 minutes John Oliver looked at Trump and asks four questions we are still struggling with years later.
Trump versus reality — Four Questions:
How did we get a pathological liar in the White House?
Where are his lies coming from?
Why do so many people believe him?
What can we possibly do about it?
In 2022 we are still struggling with those questions, and the problem has gotten far greater. Trump is the role model for Republican Party candidates; we should be asking those questions about all of them and the people who support them.
One of the things that is troubling is this. Aside from the parts that are pure comedy, Oliver has put together a solid fact-based presentation. It was all there to see at the time. Why was the ‘serious’ press so unable to even talk about any of this? Why are they still struggling even now?
Watch Oliver and ask a few more questions:
Why didn't more people see Trump for what he was then, why is he still running loose, and what do we do about the rest of the Trump wanna-be’s out there?
