It’s a whale! It’s a dolphin! It’s an apex predator!

All true. Orcas are genetically most closely related to the dolphins but also grouped with toothed whales.

What they aren’t is a threat to humans in the wild. Captive orcas have injured or killed their handlers on occasion, though.

we’ll get along fine if you don’t try to cage me!

Orcas have extremely stable matrilineal pods, with differing vocalizations that are passed down through generations, a manifestation of culture.

Some orca groups prefer fish. Some hunt marine mammals instead. They are very good at echolocating prey.

Male and female orcas have distinct dorsal fins.
