Hello, this is RWPOINTWOMAN, and this is Last Week in Japanese News. Here I post translations of Easy Japanese news articles and it's almost invariably just the Easy section.
My vocabulary runs through almost all of JLPT N5, the bulk of N4, and parts of N3, N2, and N1; N1 is most advanced; N5 is beginner. I checked.
My understanding of grammar is mostly up to the midway point of N3, but I have been exposed to N1 and N2. I am using a combination of the grammar bank pages at Easy Japanese and Nihongoal, a YouTube channel based on the Minna no Nihongo, for that.
My writing practice mostly consisted of Japanese poetry; however, that has stopped. I favored traditional Japanese poetry styles. First, I did haiku, and I even looked up kigo (season words) and the "cutting words". Then, it was tanka. Tanka are poems with a 5/7/5/7/7 structure. Each of those numbers consists of morae. Each of those is denoted by a separate hiragana. While there are no "cutting words", there is a pivot line, and it writing tanka difficult.
These days, it's replying to Japanese tweets of cats.
I got two kanji study apps but largely stopped using the second and as for the first, it is inferior.
My speaking practice consisted of talking to a friend who is currently too busy.
And my listening practice is on hold until I pick up more vocabulary.
Anyway, on with the show!
September 18, 2022:
Tokyo National Museum to display The Palace Museum's collection digitally. (Asahi)
The Tokyo National Palace is opening a digital exhibition of the collection of The Palace Museum in Beijing, China. This is to commemorate the 50th anniversary of normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and China and the exhibits are VR and 3D reproductions of part of the Palace Museum (Forbidden City)'s cultural assets collection that can be used freely. The exhibition uses digital technology from a major printing company that includes relief printing and one can both appreciate works of art projected onto a big screen by slowly rotating the objects from a variety of angles going up to 360° and see magnified details of a delicately-rendered representation of the Senrie Mountain Picture Scrolls. The exhibition will run until September 19.
September 19, 2022:
iPhone to sell for ¥20,000 more due to cheap yen, line forms in morning. (Asahi)
About 50% of the smartphones in Japan are Apple's iPhones. On September 16, sales of a new type began and a line formed early in the morning. A line of over 100 people formed at the Ometasando company store in Tokyo at 6:00 AM. Customer who paid over ¥220,000: "It looks like what I saved money to buy."* Because of the cheap yen, even the price of the cheapest type over ¥20,000 more expensive than last year's. The most expensive type starts at ¥239,800.
I'm not sure of this translation.
September 20, 2022:
Technology for earthquake-resistant construction tested. (NHK)
Because of the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011, there were many areas in cities as far away from epicenter as Tokyo and Osaka where tall buildings shook greatly, collapsing ceilings, walls, etcs. Construction companies have developed technology to reduce tremors. Until now, the stabilizing mechanism went beneath the top, but this latest version will have them going on top. On September 15, the new technology was tested. A small-scale model was used and was subjected to vibrations like those of an earthquake. It was discovered that compared with conventional buildings, those constructed using the new technology vibrate over 30%. The plan is to use this for a 43-storey building in February 2025.
New COVID-19 shots to be rolled out. (NHK)
A new COVID-19 vaccine was rolled out on September 20. The Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare believes that it is more effective against omicron than the original. This vaccine is for use in people aged 12 and up who have received at least 2 doses. It can be obtained by those who have gone at least 5 months since their last dose. Persons who are aged 60 and up and/or work in hospitals could receive it with an appointment on September 20 in the Harbour Ward of Tokyo. Administration at other places like cities and towns will began after preparations have been made. The Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare wants to administer it to everyone who wants one by the end of December. Because of this, there is also a plan to give these at places like job sites. They are thinking of making it available to those who had their last dose less than 5 months earlier.
That's all for now.
