Oh, really?
Thoughts On Abortion
We humans throughout our history have engaged lavishly in killing the born amongst us and have constructed a host of rationalizations to justify it. Capital punishment is still with us and its advocates argue for its deterrent effect when there is no clearcut evidence of any such effect.
The Catholic church derived a now long-standing doctrine of just wars and necessary wars that has been used as an excuse for all manner of blood-letting exercises. Even the Nazis proclaimed divine approval of their slaughter in their war cry "Gott mit uns". A member of Congress became all weepy eyed defending high prices and profits for pharmaceutical companies while ignoring the plight of people dying because they cannot afford the medicines they need.
In light of thousands of years of bellicose traditions I see no reason why the unborn should receive an exemption or be accorded a special status. Truly we are not pro-life, nor do we really believe in the sacredness of human life. Those of us who are pro-birth, however, are all too ready to subject the new born to the horror show aspects of human existence such as war, disease, and famine.
In Ukraine, Russia’s invasion has resulted in 5916 killed, including 379 children. (1) The U.S. has the highest infant mortality rate of comparable OECD countries (2). Not only that, but in 2016 2.5 million American children were homeless and 16.2 million children lacked the means to get enough nutritious food on a regular basis. (2) On May 2, 2019, The New York Times featured an article stating that nearly half of college students surveyed reported going hungry.
So I don't think it matters when a human life is terminated and the rationalizations on behalf of the unborn are no better or worse than for the born. An aborted fetus in an era dominated by the Social Darwinism of the contemporary conservative ideology of greed and selfishness (as if “ideology” can be associated with base, primal urgings dredged up directly from the Id) would likely have been born to a life of poverty, malnutrition, disease, addiction, and crime -- a slow death indeed.
I see no reason to wait and merely delay the inevitable.
