Overall, 2022 was a pretty good tomato year; I think we ended up with about 10 gallons in the freezer. As usual, Big Beef did most of the heavy lifting as far as production was concerned. My 6 plants are still producing fruit and are over 8 feet tall...

Thanks to our own GCNY, 2022 also saw me embark on a tomato breeding adventure called The Sully Project; y’all can read about that here, and here. That project turned out to be more difficult to manage than I anticipated; I’m pretty bad at keeping notes and documenting things... The Sullys produced several different fruit shapes and colors from the F2 seeds, including yellow, red, pink, orange, and even a striped one. All the fruit were on the small size, ranging from grape size to slightly larger than a golf ball. I’m still processing seeds from about 10 different plants, and will be deciding which ones I will be growing next year. One that really impressed was Sully Orange Grape; (that’s my name for it, for now) it was very productive and very tasty. It’ll be interesting to see what it produces from the F3 seeds next year...

There were two plants in that container. Interestingly, the plant on the right produced not one single tomato...

Two other varieties deserve special mention: Stump of the World and Chef’s Choice Pink F5; both are very good tasting tomatoes...

Stump of the World on the left...

As my title suggests, things are winding down. I’ve already pulled all except the Big Beef plants.

Obligatory cute kitty picture...

Tomato season 2022 was not all wine and roses, however. My old friend, the Root Knot Nematode reared it’s ugly head once again. The roots of every plant I pulled were affected to some degree...

Apparently, my mitigation efforts so far have not been very effective. I don’t expect to see major damage to the Big Beef plants, as they are a nematode resistant hybrid. There’s some good info on that topic here. I’ll have to do some more research…

It was not a good year over in The Pepper Patch. The Prairie Spice plants produced enough for me to make a respectable amount of hot sauce, but everything else produced poorly and were small, especially the jalapeños. I don’t think any of the pepper plants appreciated being confined by the cat proof wire fencing; you can read more about that here...

I’m kind of embarrassed to even post a picture of this mess...

On a lifestyle note, I’ve been unemployed for about two weeks now, and I’ve loved every minute. It’s given me time to get some household projects finished, and do more fishing. The all time record for this lake is 10lb/4oz, so I’m moving up!

My personal best (so far) at 9½ lbs.

I can only be here for a couple of hours this morning, as my truck and I are needed to finish moving my Stepdaughter, her soon-to-be husband, their 3 dogs and 2 cats into their new home. Yay for the new homeowners, and YAY for some peace and quiet at my home!

It’s a very pleasant 580 here this morning. I see that Tropical Storm Ian is expected to strengthen to a major hurricane Sunday into Monday; Cuba and most of Florida is “in the cone”, so you folks in Desantistan need to pay attention!

Also, please join me in welcoming our two newest SMGB members, CWalter, and tspvilca! Pull up a chair, grab a cup of coffee and let us know what’s going on in your garden!
