Hello and happy weekend, everyone.

Here is a “test” of sorts for you (I promise you will not fail).

My friend and his family moved from California to Ohio a while back. As a result of slow database turnover, they recently received both CA and OH voting materials to set side-by-side and compare/contrast.

Liberal and conservative-run states. Hmmm, how different could they be?

To be clear, the examples below have different purposes:

Voter information (CA)

Requesting absentee ballots (OH)

Both flyers provide plenty of space to inform with. Which one neutrally informs and which one panders and propagandizes?

Extra credit for not skipping to the clues below.

Please note: Certain pages have been flipped for readability. Also, the overlay of red “Invalid Example” is my friend’s cautious insertion from fear of unknown legalities.

I will also mention that I realize the smaller font on these images is not too easy to read. I didn’t want to ask my friend to scan these at a higher resolution or to do any more work – just for my sharing this here on DK.

You will still get the gist of the comparison.

Fun fact:

- The CA mailer was printed on thick stock, the OH one on low-cost flimsy stock. (To me, this really does not matter too much, but it still says something about the “quality” of the materials).

One of these flyers:

- Uses dog whistle words like TAKE BACK and FIGHT

- Suggests elections are not secure and safe.

- Provokes gasoline cost anger (apparently printed before gas prices dropped.)

Extra credit:

- The OH forms have no delivery address. They are just pamphlets stuffed into mailboxes.

But wait. There’s more AND it is much worse:

Looking further (which may be harder to see here):

- The return address may work but isn't the full address for that government entity.

- Googling only that address brings up a fake site with menu links leading to nothing.

- The forms themselves are illicit, only approximating the official forms found online.

So, this Ohio flyer, stuffed into how many mailboxes across the state (or maybe even targeted D cities?) ARE OR ARE NOT legitimate government mailers??? They ARE asking people to fill out a form for a vote by mail ballot and mail it to an incomplete address that MAY NEVER ARRIVE for processing!

How many people will fall for it? We all know that the orange asshole has demonized voting by mail, so is the idea for only Democrats and Democratic leaning Independents to fill out these forms and mail them to nowhere?

Are they “just” a cheap trick by some right-wing organization to sway minds and perpetuate right wing anger – but with a possible real-world consequence of suppressing Democratic votes?

The fake forms and incomplete address may dodge prosecution. But how many voters will have assumed this is a legit, government form and mail it back only to realize too late that their “vote by mail application” never got processed?

This bullshit should be illegal!

I hope someone in OH is looking into whether or not this violates any laws.

Thanks for reading my second ever in the whole wide world diary.

:)
