DeSantis’ Plot to Use Immigrants to Win the Republican Nomination [1]

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) has continued to pursue a cynical strategy of weaponizing migrants for electoral gain. Most recently, the governor paid a charter plane to fly Venezuelan migrants, some of whom were asylum seekers, from San Francisco, Texas, to Martha’s Vineyard, Mass. The move has led to a backlash, not just from Democrats, but from the Hispanic community. The stunt is an example of how the Republican party has dehumanized immigrants. It is also an attack on the Constitution.
DeSantis and the Republicans say that their move is a protest against the Biden Administration’s lax immigration practices, and a supposed border crisis. They have cynically calculated that, because they do not want immigrants, Democratic states will not want them either, and so, by busing and flying immigrants to Blue states, they will expose the hypocrisy of Democrats. This strategy says more about Republicans than it does about Democrats. Democrats have not responded by seeking to close the border, or build Trump’s wall. They have, rather, said that it is a violation of the rights of immigrants to deceive them into making these trips. Already, there is at least one civil lawsuit that has been brought against DeSantis and a Texas sheriff is investigating how these migrants were lured into the plane.
