The Trump supporters need to be taken on with Facts and Respect. I know they are frustrating to converse with due to their conflicted rhetoric, but we must try for the sake of the Nation. Three of their foundational delusions are “immigration”, “The Economy” and “When was America Great”. We need to address these issues in a factual and Yes (swallow hard) respectful ways—no matter how disrespectful they get.
1) immigration is a very complex issue but we need to remind them that most of the Immigrants coming over the border are not taking middle class jobs. They are Fruit pickers, landscapers and maids who are hired by the wealthy. The High paying Middle class jobs like Steel workers, Coal Minors, Stamping plants, Machining Operator, Forging Press Operator, Foreman and middle managers, were all moved to impoverished countries with cheap labor, which includes our southern neighbors. (GM’s Lordstown Ohio plant is just one example).
Remind them that NAFTA was a Republican GH Bush bill that more Dems voted against than voted for it. So while the DEMS are not blameless, the GOP bares most of the responsibility for NAFTA and the job losses that go with it.
2) “The Economy” many Trumpers seem to believe Trump when he states that he had “The Best Economy Ever”, This is factual WRONG. we need to point out the truth. The Best Metric (indicator) of Economic prosperity is REAL (Inflation adjusted) GDP growth Rate over Time. It’s based on data going all the way back to the 1920’s. If the Economy is growing at an average REAL GDP rate of 4%, the economy is doing well as jobs and New Businesses are being created. Which means higher wages for the workers/employees and Greater Consumption. Trumps last full year BEFORE the pandemic hit, REAL GDP growth had slowed to 2.5%, which is considered “Stagnant to Poor”.
Best Economic Presidents --Real GDP growth average (Budget year to budget year) First is FDR 9% for 8 years prior to US entering WW2. He maintained that Average till his death. Number 2 is JFK with 5.4% and LBJ rounds out the top 3 with an average of 4.7% REAL GDP growth rate.
Republicans hold the bottom 3 positions with Hoover -7% (contraction), GW Bush at 1.8% and GH Bush at 2.0% Real GDP growth rate.
Finally, 3) “Make America Great Again” is their slogan but they are confused as to exactly WHEN America was great.
America was GREAT when the Economy was booming at a 4.5% average REAL GDP growth rate. It was from 1933 till the late seventies, that’s when the corporate tax rate was 50% and Top income rate on the wealthy was 70% to 93%, Stock buy backs were illegal, most workers enjoyed regular wage increases, Christmas Bonuses, Free Company Health Care and company funded pensions.
If you want this prosperity to return you have to raise Taxes on High Income dollars of the Rich. I know this sounds contrary from what the Politicians keep saying, but the math supports it.
When the company owners gets to keep $.80 on every dollar that they take away from the employee, they Take, Take, Take, which includes moving operations to impoverished countries. If the wealthy could only keep $.09 on the dollar because of the 91% tax rate, they wouldn’t move the business. It wasn’t worth it. So when the TOP Tax on income dollars over $1 million were up to 91% they weren’t moving operations offshore. Instead they gave raises, paid for health care and pensions.
This made us boom as all this prosperity created the “Baby Boom” because mothers could afford to stay at home and care for the children. That’s when America was great. Pass it on as you see fit, but remember to be respectful--Oscar
