Florida's Supreme Court has had a Federalist Society takeover, but we can stop that together
Abortion is up and down the ballot and this year and that includes the Florida Supreme Court. Since 1980, Floridians have had the right to privacy under the state constitution, including the right to abortion. However, in recent years, the seven-member Florida Supreme Court has become populated by the extreme parts of the Federalist Society who bend the law to suit their desires. It has become one of the most right wing courts in the nation. Only one moderate remains: Justice Jorge Labarga.
This month, Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody asked the Florida Supreme Court to change the meaning of “privacy” under the Florida Constitution and say women have no right to an abortion. Moody and Ron DeSantis are confident they have the Florida Supreme Court on their side. We can imagine how they may seek to limit privacy more in the future. But you can change that with your vote.
Five justices are on the ballot. Only Justice Labarga should receive a “YES” vote. The other 4 justices: Canady, Polston, Couriel and Grosshans are all right wing extremists like Clarence Thomas and share an agenda to take away women’s rights and promote narrow special interests. These four should all be “NO” votes.
Justice Labarga, the first Cuban American Florida Supreme Court Justice, affirmed the right to abortion in 2017 and has repeatedly disagreed with these four justices, who have changed state law to favor special interests like Big Tobacco, canceled funding for public transportation in Hillsborough County, approved gerrymandered election maps and blocked Floridians from voting on expansion of Medicaid and legal marijuana.
Voting NO and removing these 4 justices would send a strong, Kansas-like message that Florida supports privacy rights, fair courts and judges who follow the law.
