This Friday, September 23rd, the National Park Service in Fort Scott Kansas will hold a Naturalization Ceremony for 120 new citizens. A proud event for the participants. America is enriched and our new compatriots have all the rights (except becoming President) as the native born.

Members of the Johnson County chapter of the League of Women Voters help register new voters at a naturalization ceremony in 2019. The nine Kansas leagues are abandoning plans to attend naturalization ceremonies this summer, as well as all other voter registration and education efforts, for fear of criminal prosecution under a new law.

In years past the League of Women Voters set up a table to register new voters. This year they will not.

For each person these volunteers assist to register to vote they face one to three years in prison. Even if they are only given probation they would lose their own right to vote.

Kansas HB 2183 False Representation of an Election Official

The bill creates the crime of false representation of an election official, defined as knowingly engaging in any of the following by phone, mail, email, website, or other online activity or other means of communication while not holding a position as an election official: ● Representing oneself as an election official;

● Engaging in conduct that gives the appearance of being an election official; or

● Engaging in conduct that would cause another person to believe a person

engaging in such conduct is an election official. The bill defines an “election official” to mean the Secretary, any employee of the Secretary, any county election commissioner or county clerk, any employee of any county election commissioner or county clerk, or any other person employed by a county election office. False representation of an election official will be a level 7 nonperson felony.

Kansas Republicans hate voting.

They hate immigrants.

They want to put Grandma in prison.
