This 92lb goofball decided to raid the bowl where Mr. Brillig and I were putting the radishes we harvested from our garden and use one as a chew toy. He brought it inside and you can see what he thinks of it! Simba is balm for our grieving hearts.

Last week I shared here that my beloved Vorpal had gone to Rainbow Bridge. You never quite realize what a presence a pet has in your life until they’re gone, and this past week was difficult as we adjusted to her absence. Simba is doing his best to step into her shoes, although we suspect he will NEVER shed as much as she did :). Today, though, I got the call and went back to the vet hospital to pick Vorpal up one last time… her ashes and pawprint were ready.

I ugly cried in the parking lot as I carried the blue paper bag with its blue velvet-wrapped bamboo urn. I waited until I was home to peek inside and see her pawprint memorialized, and to see how the engraving on the box looked. We’d asked that her name, dates of birth and bridge, and a specific phrase be added to memorialize our goodest girl.

Umm.

For fourteen years, almost no one has ever gotten her name correct. If people aren’t familiar with the poem Jabberwocky, they don’t recognize the reference. Even my own typos were so bad I have an autocorrect in my phone to correct Borpal to Vorpal.

But she’s never been a Lad. Always a Lady, sometimes a Diva (whenever I tried to take her photo, she always knew and moved or hid her face). And so help me, I broke out into peals of laughter while simultaneously managing another round of ugly crying.

I’d checked the working on the submission form about 20304 times prior to hitting submit, because I’d been warned once the button was pressed I would be unable to change anything. But our bestest good girl is NOT going through eternity like this, and so I called. Thankfully the company who handles the Vet Hospital cremations was very understanding… they said the Y must have been clipped off, and that even though their paperwork said Lad they’d happily fix it for me. And so tomorrow Vorpal is going to the Vet Hospital one last time, so that Forget-Me-Not can pick her up, add a Y, and bring her back.

As I sat down to write this, I was reminded of many years ago at my uncle’s funeral service. His wishes were that his ashes be scattered from a plane. And so we all gathered, reminiscing as we waited for the plane. We saw it coming, and saw the poof as my uncle was set free into the air overhead.

And then realized what inevitably was going to happen next. And we all placed a hand over our beverages. I had repressed this memory for years until Mr. Brillig reminded me, but I remember now trying not to laugh at a funeral while knowing this totally was going to be something we remembered with a smile. This is how I’m going to remember Vorpal now, with smiles at her very last act.

How about you? Ever had one of those typos that just absolutely shouldn’t have happened and yet there it is? Or had a moment where the chuckles were coming right through the tears? Please share in the comments, after perusing our weekend Tops!
