In the image of their leader.

Part 2 of the diary is now posted. This week’s edition is presented with minimal commentary from me. This was a “target rich” past week for cartoonists and many more editorial cartoons than usual were published. And I had to save and sift through almost 200 cartoons to choose the better ones for these diaries. Part II of this diary includes sections on MAGA lunacy, the pillow guy, Air DeSantis, and a few other things. Part I of this diary has over 25 editorial cartoons in it and covers the issues of abortion, Russia-Ukraine, and Trump’s bizarre behavior. I’ve posted another 15 or so cartoons so far in the comments section. Link to Part 1 of This Diary — “Overturning Roe Remains as Unpopular as Ever” — The Week in Editorial Cartoons, Part 1. Assorted MAGA Nuts

Where does the GOP find these idiots, buffoons, and grifters? They are the lowest of the low and dumbest of the dumb. Surely, in a country of 325+ million people, there are, undoubtedly, a few other people who might be a bit smarter. Must we accept and celebrate mediocrity at the national political level? With these people at the top of our political life, it is one hell of an image to project abroad.

There's always been a strain of anti-intellectualism in American life, but this group has elevated it to new heights. Is this the group we want as our new political overlords? I sure as hell do not.

x The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political & cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that “my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.” — Issac Asimov, 1980, on the US “cult of ignorance.” pic.twitter.com/NdeymrdV2K — Brent Toderian (@BrentToderian) August 4, 2020

What Ron DeSantis and Greg Abbott are doing is inhumane, cruel, and criminal. If the immigrants weren’t brown and, instead, were coming from Norway, Sweden, or Australia, would they be packed in buses and dispatched a long way from Texas and Florida?

Of course not. The actions of these governors are shameful and flat-out racist.

On one of the presidential campaigns I have worked on, I had an interesting experience that is somewhat connected to this diary’s poll.

A retired high school English teacher, Nancy, would volunteer three times per week for about 15 hours, without asking anything in return. She would frequently talk about how brilliant and politically aware her husband was. No matter the issue, her husband seemed to have an opinion. After listening to her numerous times about what her husband would do, I gently asked her once if he would be interested in coming and helping us at the campaign HQs.

Nancy’s response? “You don’t understand, JnH. My husband, Doug, is a pundit!”

Don’t be just a pundit. Do something. Thanks.
