Back to the Future: Or How I learned To Stop Worrying And Love The ROLLER DERBY [1]

Nightmare On Elm Street
Until today I haven’t been able to pigeonhole another period in my 71 years of life where a substantial segment of the population would knowingly embrace lies as truth and blindly follow a corrupt pied piper of evil while ignoring what they see and hear with their eyes and ears.
While my memory now fluctuates in clarity, from remembering a galaxy far, far away, to forgetting why I just walked from the living room into the kitchen…. a comparable previous period in my life, to where we are now headed occurred to me.
Today’s MAGA and QAnon members and followers are no different than those who became mesmerized and idolized the participants of ROLLER DERBY in the early 70’s.
MAGA/QAnon followers have the same characteristics that Roller Derby fanatics had... the ability to suspend, disbelief, logic, reality, intelligence and common sense.
Neither the MAGA/QAnon’s or Roller Derby fans, do not, or did not, believe or care if any laws or rules are enforced upon their heroes who they consider the absolute “good guys” but those same laws and rules should be enforced to the maximum extent upon their adversaries who are the absolute “bad guys.”
Both group’s rallies and “performances” are and were highly choreographed, scripted and expertly marketed. Both groups believe(d) the “good guys” would always prevail and win in the end, at the last second, no matter how much the “bad guys” cheated.
Throughout history empires have failed. Like the Romans, Chinese, Ottomans, Germans and Japanese, but it was always precipitated by a large segment of the population who considered values and the sense of, humanity and knowledge, a weakness, and those qualities were replaced as the primary covenants of their society by those with a quest for power and wealth and authoritarianism being preeminent, resulting in the residual of chaos and the law becoming the providence of only those who are in power.
Absurd? Of course, it is, but we are now a society living in absurdity.
“You don’t need a weatherman to see which way the wind blows’” was a harbinger of Reagan, and can be of someone worse, getting elected and becoming a permanent authoritarian President, over us….
We are a divided nation whether or not we want to acknowledge it. The storm clouds are gathering on the horizon that signals the expiration date for our Democracy the closer we get to 2024.
Below is what is purported to be the “best” Roller Derby match ever, in 1973, while just miles away, in Berkeley, where like thousands had been protesting the War in Vietnam and Civil Rights and the expression of might over right was a 180-degree change in our country’s direction a few years before.
The United States will become ROLLER DERBY NATION if we let it happen
