I have chosen a title with a bit of ambiguity but the news is grim. For the first time, Chinese-made ammo is found in Russian possession at the Ukrainian front-lines. This also makes it likely that the North Korean ammo supposedly sold to Russia was also a conduit for Chinese hardware (as was speculated for a long time now).

This needs to be verified and right now it is early days but we now have a real prospect of something ugly slowly boiling over into reality.

If this information holds up then we can expect a major escalation of this conflict and broadening of its footprint. One might not expect a direct East/West war just yet. Right now, increasing sanctions, decreasing trade and military and economic pressure across several continents are the most likely. However if the war in Ukraine and China-NATO standoff lasts for a few months, it may be hard to hold back a rising tide of hatred on both sides. Expect racial and ethnic slurs everywhere in the USA if livelihoods start faltering because Chinese goods disappear and Chinese contracts fall through and the same on the other side. At some point, an actual hot war is going to be hard to prevent.

I am feeling very dark today. China has taken a very very dangerous step and imho this tiny seemingly insignificant news gets us much farther towards oblivion than all of Putin’s threats combined.
