True story:

I cannot tell a lie. Well, maybe little ones. But not whoppers. So if you know any, please share. The only ones I know are jokes that sound, almost, like they could be true.

Morning Open Thread is a daily, copyrighted post from a host of editors and guest writers. We support our community, invite and share ideas, and encourage thoughtful, respectful dialogue in an open forum. This is a post where you can come to share what’s on your mind and stay for the expansion. The diarist is on California time and gets to take a nap when he needs to, or may just wander off and show up again later. So you know, it's a feature, not a bug. Grab your supportive indulgence(s) of choice and join us, please. And if you’re brand new to Morning Open Thread, then Hail and Well Met, new Friend.

For instance: a fellow gets drafted, and is miserable about it and wants out, before he even finishes boot camp. So from the very first day he’s just walking around all the time with his eyes fixed on the ground. When asked what the heck he’s doing he just replies, “Lookin’ for sumpin’, I’m looking for sumpin’.” Every spare minute, that’s what he’s doing: mumbling, eyes on the ground, “I”m looking for something”. He gets sent for medical evaluation, psychological, and eventually the doctors agree there’s something wrong in his head and he’s not fit for duty.

He’s handed his discharge papers, and exclaims “That’s what I’ve been looking for!”

The camera never lies. Well, maybe it shades the truth with a little color and contrast adjustment. Thursday, Sept. 15, at Dellinger’s Pond, Quincy, CA:

I had thought that maybe Harper (as I’ve named a particular Great Blue Heron that had been a regular hanger-outer at Dellinger’s over the entire month of August), had scarpered. The last time I’d seen it was August 26, but then on August 29 I had my medical crisis and six days of hospitalization; I went back a couple of times after coming home on September 3 to briefly look and it wasn’t there. Then on Thursday (the 15th) I was feeling fairly up to another excursion, so packed up my field chair and tripod for an extended session. Not only had Harper come back in, to my great surprise he had a most unexpected companion sloshing around in the same little backwater.

A “first” for me, photograph of a raccoon. And so close to the GBH; it’s amazing to me that they were so tolerant of each other.

The raccoon actually bumped into Harper once and made Harper flap a few feet away, but equanimity was very quickly restored.

Other denizens espied this day:

California Mule Deer and fawn

Northern Red-shafted Flicker

Spotted Towhee

Lesser Goldfinch

So, c’mon, lie to me. Fool me good.

I’d let Annie lie to me, you darn betcha! And I’d love it!
