Halle Bailey’s rendition of “Part of Your World” musical number as Princess Ariel
As many of us here on Daily Kos have heard by now, the Walt Disney Company cast a black actress named Halle Bailey as Princess Ariel in its upcoming live-action “Little Mermaid” remake, and that right-wingers are having racist temper tantrums about it, tantrums that include, as I had expected, use of the “woke” label. Here is the trailer (featuring a portion of Bailey’s rendition of “Part of Your World”) for the remake.
Here are some of the responses.
And here is some of the racist backlash, some of which dates back to the start of July of 2019, when it was first announced that Bailey had been cast as the mermaid princess.
And here is Ariel’s original voice actress, Jodi Benson, rebuking the racists and defending Bailey.
This is the same racist temper tantrum that the far-right had at Star Trek over Stacey Abrams’ cameo as a Federation official in Star Trek: Discovery and the history lesson from Christopher Pike and the crew of the starship that the whole franchise began with — the NCC-1701 Enterprise — in the pilot episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, a history lesson that involved footage of the insurrection at the Capitol.
Quite frankly, I would love for Halle Bailey to represent the United Federation of Planets as a Starfleet officer aboard the Enterprise and operate the Transporter in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds after starring as a Disney Princess.
And a personal note about myself regarding Star Trek and Trump’s efforts to overturn Biden’s 2020 victory: I was in my home in St Louis, Missouri, and under the covers, watching Star Trek: Voyager on my smartphone at 10:30am St Louis time on November 7, 2020 (back when it was on Netflix) when, seemingly out of nowhere, a CNN notification popped up saying that CNN was calling Pennsylvania (and with it, the entire presidential election) for Joseph Robinette Biden, Jr. I immediately threw the covers off, jumped out of bed, and ran out of the room with excitement at the realization that history had been made.
As someone who grew up watching Disney cartoons and whose parents met at a Star Trek event (and whose dad even knew Eugene Wesley Roddenberry, Sr), I find right-wing media outlets and personalities not worthy of interviewing either a Disney Princess character or a representative of the United Federation of Planets, and certainly not worthy of interviewing any Starfleet officer serving aboard any Federation starship named “Enterprise” with an NCC-1701 registry. But then again, Disney and Star Trek are definitely “woke” to Fox News, and probably to other right-wing media outlets and personalities, as well.
