The Road Ahead

Clearly the best weekly stats we’ve seen in this pandemic for quite some time. Nearly all signs now point to significantly lower new infection numbers and deaths over the next few weeks, spurred on by the dramatically lower trends out of Japan. Note that the global weekly death toll would be even lower if Greece hadn’t chosen this moment to revise its overall death toll upwards by nearly 1,000, though this was partially offset by the lack of new stats out of the UK this week.

The only potential downside to this week’s nearly universal good news is that new deaths seem to remain much higher in the US than most other parts of the world, particularly given the more than 60% decline in new cases over the past 6 weeks. But unless there is a dangerous new variant lurking somewhere over our current horizon, the future really does look promising at this point, particularly with the new Omicron-specific boosters now available (just got mine today).
