Ramsey Lewis (May 27,1935-September 12, 2022)

Jazz pianist, three-time Grammy winner and NEA Jazz Master Ramsey Lewis, died at his home in Chicago on Sept. 12. He was 87. Born in Chicago and raised in the Cabrini Green housing project, Ramsey E.Lewis, Jr. began taking piano lessons at age 4. He played piano at the church where his father was choir director.

In 1956, the Ramsey Lewis Trio released their first album, Ramsey Lewis and His Gentlemen of Jazz. His big break through came in 1965 with the crossover hit “The In Crowd,” which won him his first Grammy. That hit was followed by Billboard chart-toppers, “Hang On Sloopy” and “Wade in the Water.”

Lewis has been the recipient of five honorary doctorate degrees and an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Jazz Artist. “The In Crowd” single was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, and his personal memorabilia are archived at the Smithsonian Institution. In 2007, Lewis received the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master Award.

Ramsey’s forthcoming album, The Beatles Songbook: The Saturday Salon Series, Volume One, which will be released Nov. 11 by Steele Records, was drawn from his livestream performances. He spent the last year of his life working on his memoir Gentleman of Jazz with co-writer Aaron Cohen, scheduled for release in 2023.

The Guardian has published a tribute that includes samplings of several of Ramsey’s recordings and one of his most memorable live performance.
