Donald Trump has said that he will pardon the insurrectionists who stormed the Capitol on January 6, if he wins the 2024 election. Although Republicans have indeed been bought, lock, stock, and smoking barrel, by MAGA extremists, even Republican senators were alarmed by Trump’s promise.
Trump’s comments were made during a Save America rally in Texas, where he did his usual trick of saying he’s going to run in 2024, without saying he is going to run in 2024. His comments were so absurd that one of his closest senatorial allies, Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), spoke out , saying that it was a “bad idea” to pardon these people, because, “Pardons are given to people who admit misconduct, rehabilitate themselves. They’re not supposed to be used for other purposes”. Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), another otherwise reliable Trump ally, pointed out the obvious: “I don’t think potential candidates should hold pardons out as a promise. It’s somewhat problematic for me on a moral level and an ethical level — sort of like promising other giveaways to particular individuals.”
It is not usual for Trump to face a rebuke of his own agenda. The Republican Party is, now more than ever, with the eviction of Never Trumpers such as congresswoman Liz Cheney (R-WY), the Party of Trump and his MAGA philosophy. Yet, even this now semi-fascistic party was astounded to see Trump cross yet another line. This should not make anyone imagine that the party would, if Trump were president, protest if he issued pardons. The spine of the party has gone. The instinctive reaction of the party’s leaders is what they know deep inside. Within inches of power, they will once again relent, and, as always, fall into line, and find ways to explain why pardoning insurrectionists is a great idea. For now, before Trump has unleashed his dogs of extremism on his critics, they will speak against this idea, knowing full well what Democrats have always known: that Trump’s ideas are corrupt and erode the rule of law. Of course, they have an easy out: his supporters have already brought out the myth of violent Black Lives Matter protests, and are arguing that a pardon is in the interests of fairness. We can be sure that if Trump is elected, insurrectionists will be pardoned, and Republicans will support him.
