We have all seen the stories about how Republican candidates are stripping their advertising of any mention of abortion. Blake Masters has done so in Arizona, for example. WE NEED TO SHOW THESE RIGHT-WING FANATICS THAT WE HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN WHO THEY ARE AND WHAT THEY WANT. Rachel Bitecofer, as usual, is right on the money with why we need to do so:

Let’s remind everybody of the following:

WALKER:

Georgia Senate candidate and former football star Herschel Walker said Wednesday he supports abortion bans without any exceptions for rape, incest or the health of the mother. “There’s no exception in my mind,” Walker told reporters after a campaign speech. “Like I say, I believe in life. I believe in life.”

JOHNSON:

Ron Johnson admitted that he would support Congress imposing a national abortion ban. “From voting to confirm anti-choice Justices to supporting a national abortion ban, Ron Johnson has made taking away Wisconsinites’ right to make their own health care decisions a top priority. Johnson’s dangerous and out of touch efforts are a direct threat to Wisconsinites’ freedoms,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Senate Communications Advisor Philip Shulman. This comes after Johnson took credit for helping overturn Roe v. Wade, which in Wisconsin, has eliminated access to nearly all abortions.

RUBIO:

(26 August) Republican Senator Marco Rubio of Florida said in an interview that he does not support abortion in the cases of rape and incest in an interview Thursday evening. Mr Rubio, who is up for reelection in 2022, was asked by CBS4 News in Miami’s Jim DeFede whether he opposed abortion in all cases, including rape, incest and human trafficking.

VANCE:

Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, everyone’s been sharing their hot takes about abortion and whether women should have the right to do what they want with their bodies. In an interview with Catholic Current, Rep. Senate nominee J.D. Vance shared his take: that he thinks there’s something “comparable” between abortion and slavery. “- while the people who obviously suffer the most are those subjected to it, I think it has this morally distorting effect on the entire society - I really think abortion has really done something very socially destructive to us as people in how we see the most vulnerable and the most dependent among us. I think that’s one of the under-appreciated facts about abortion. It’s really distorted our entire society,” said Vance in the interview.

MASTERS:

Masters repeatedly stated support for a federal personhood law before his primary victory Aug. 3. He was often vague about when during a pregnancy it would apply. In a September 2021 interview, Masters said Congress "should have a debate and pick a certain point and say, ‘No, we’re going to recognize, right here, federal personhood and past that, absolutely no abortions.’" In an interview in December 2021, Masters was asked whether he would support a national law banning abortion. He said: "Yeah, I mean life is always worth protecting. … Certainly I’m running for U.S. Senate, at the federal level, I think Roe v. Wade should be overturned, and I do think we need a personhood amendment that recognizes (unintelligible) it’s a baby even before it’s born."

BUDD:

(North Carolina)

Charlotte Observer: ‘Loudly and clearly.’ How Supreme Court’s abortion ruling could affect NC Senate race — “At a news conference Friday in Raleigh, Democratic nominee Cheri Beasley, the former N.C. Supreme Court chief justice, said the ruling has brought the country to a turning point, one that she hoped would energize Democratic voters. Her Republican competitor, U.S. Rep. Ted Budd, issued a statement of his own, calling the decision ‘a victory for the millions of unborn children who may now realize the most fundamental of all human rights, the right to life.’” The Hill: How the end of Roe v. Wade could impact North Carolina’s Senate race — ”Rep. Ted Budd, the Republican nominee for Senate, praised the court’s decision Friday as a ‘historic victory.’ He also signed the amicus brief urging the courts to review and overturn Roe v. Wade and has praised the ‘creativity’ of a Texas law that bans abortion at six weeks and empowers private citizens to enforce the law. Budd has called the Texas Heartbeat Act a ‘monumental step forward in the movement to protect unborn life.’ Higher Democratic turnout due to interest in abortion rights could help Senate Democratic candidate Cheri Beasley.”

OZ:

This issue has the potential to be a blockbuster for us. Examples:

New Pa. poll points to trouble for Republicans on abortion

There are surprises in just about every political poll, but some numbers from the recent Franklin and Marshall College poll showed particularly astounding results. In the poll conducted by Franklin & Marshall College’s Center for Opinion Research, John Fetterman, the state’s lieutenant governor, leads GOP candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz 43 percent to 30 percent in the Senate race with 20 percent undecided, while Josh Shapiro leads GOP state Sen. Doug Mastriano 44 percent to 33 percent in the race for governor with 19 percent undecided… (After noting unusual Democratic strength in NW and Central PA, the author states): You have to wonder if the abortion issue could be galvanizing women to vote in the fall election even in conservative areas such as Central and Northwestern Pennsylvania.

How Americans Really Feel About Abortion

Broad support for abortion rights: Gallup polls show Americans’ support for abortion in all or most cases at 80% in May 2021, only sightly higher than in 1975 (76%), and the Pew Research Center finds 59% of adults believe abortion should be legal, compared to 60% in 1995—though there has been fluctuation, with support dropping to a low of 47% in 2009. The share of Americans in Gallup’s poll who say abortion is morally acceptable reached a record high of 47% in May, up from a low of 36% in 2009, and a Quinnipiac poll found support for abortion being legal in all or most cases reached a near-record high in September with 63% support.

So here’s what I propose: MAKE THESE REPUBLICAN CANDIDATES EVERYWHERE STATE THEIR VIEWS CLEARLY. Answer these questions:

DO YOU FAVOR OUTLAWING ABORTION IN EVERY CIRCUMSTANCE WITH NO EXCEPTIONS? IF NO, WHAT EXCEPTIONS WOULD YOU MAKE?

DO YOU FAVOR A NATIONAL BAN ON ABORTION?

DO YOU BELIEVE CHILDREN WHO HAVE BEEN RAPED AND IMPREGNATED SHOULD BE FORCED TO CARRY AN EMBRYO TO TERM?

DO YOU THINK A WOMAN CARRYING A DEAD FETUS INSIDE HER SHOULD BE FORCED TO CARRY IT TO TERM?

DO YOU THINK PREGNANT WOMEN IN STATES THAT HAVE OUTLAWED ABORTION SHOULD HAVE THEIR TRAVEL RESTRICTED, IN CASE THEY WANT TO TRAVEL TO A STATE WHERE ABORTION IS LEGAL?

WHAT LEGAL PENALTIES WOULD YOU IMPOSE ON WOMEN WHO GET AN ABORTION? WHAT LEGAL PENALTIES WOULD YOU IMPOSE ON A DOCTOR WHO PERFORMS AN ABORTION?

Don’t let them hide. Don’t let them run away from this.

Make them answer.

And, as always, GET OUT THE VOTE!!!
