Sounds of the City
I’ve frequently mentioned the noise difference between the farm and our condo. The farm was often completely silent, but for birds. Farm equipment could be noisy at times, but since it was usually my equipment it was no bother. We were off the airport approach so only a rare fire or police helicopter was heard.
Quite a difference in the heart of a city. Near-constant traffic a block away. This is exacerbated by the local fad of enhanced mufflers to create as loud a sound as possible. Plus rap from booming speakers.
Back-up beepers have no doubt saved a lot of lives, but their sound is ubiquitous, with construction trucks and more frequently, delivery trucks. And free shipping is all the rage now, so those trucks are everywhere. And we have crooked Darrell Issa to thank for car alarms. “Using sensors that, when armed, would detect motion and pressure on the car's body, his device made loud noise to draw attention to a would-be car thief, such as the car's horn honking.”
Now I rant about the noise from time to time, but though my faculties are declining as I age, my hearing has gotten more acute than ever. Fortunately, noise-cancelling headphones have been invented. Not everyone hears city sounds as negative. Here’s 10 hours for one’s pleasure:
How’s the noise level in your neighborhood? A big problem around here is the short-term rentals with noisy all-night parties. One can get used to regular sounds such as the train behind your apartment; it’s the random sounds that disrupt and annoy the most.
My noise rant might be in left field for most of y’all, so this is, as always, an open thread. Food is foremost.
