Aftermath of the Russian retreat from Kiev.
The retreat from eastern Kharkiv oblast looks a lot like the defeat and withdrawal from Kiev, Sumy and Kharkiv. It seems clear that Russia has made a decision to withdraw and re-position as many men and as much material as possible.
The Russian military will now be concentrating on The Donbas and Kherson. I don't think it’s going to go well for them. Consider:
A lot of material is being left behind. More than a few soldiers as well.
Given the damage done to its Ground Lines Of Communication, Russia will take quite some time to move their Kharkiv army to The Donbas or Crimea. Kherson is so isolated that reinforcement there may be a practical impossibility.
All of the lost Russian equipment will be replaced with old and obsolete stuff. The artillery will be less accurate and less reliable. So will the old ammunition.
Ukraine is once again receiving mountains of replacement Russian military hardware and ammunition.
The morale of Russian troops, already rock-bottom, will sink even further.
I am of the opinion that this is all happening as a result of the video meeting Putin had about two days ago.
x Vladimir Putin called an urgent meeting of Russia's security council after reports of Ukrainian breakthroughs in the Kharkiv region.

Regardless of the cause for the retreat, however, the outcome is going to be the same. Ukraine is getting back a lot of territory, and will now rapidly re-position its troop for another counteroffensive. Russia is losing a lot of weapons and ammunition, and will now struggle to adapt quickly enough to thwart the next Ukrainian offensive
EDIT: I should point out that I am not a captain of anything. I supported the U. S. Navy as an electronic warfare engineer decades ago, but have not served in the military.
I picked up the moniker when I tried to become “Factoid” but the name was already taken. I cast about for a modifier to add to my chosen (and well-earned) nickname, deciding on pre-scripting captain.
During the 1970s, Albany New York was the world’s largest producer of both stove pipe and billiard balls.
