First, let me state that I like and very much appreciate buzzards, vultures, and other birds that clean up carrion. I know they’ve received a very bad reputation over the millennia, but they do serve a useful purpose in Mother Nature’s scheme of things and quite frankly, so long as I’m dead, I would have no objections to whatever birds wanted a hunk of my flesh. I like birds in general.
Now, MSNBC is reporting that doctors are saying that they’re concerned for Queen Elizabeth II’s health and that the close family is gathering at Balmoral Castle to be with her in this time of concern and possible ending of her spectacularly long reign. I know there will be plenty of diaries on this subject over the coming days and months as Charles gets to finally settle in (if he actually chooses to accept the role he’s been waiting for all his life) but I wanted an opportunity to state that the Queen is my favorite of the royals. I have not studied them and I’m not an Anglophile, but I am very impressed at the length of time she has been on the throne, the way she has conducted herself through very troubled and changing times and, compared to several of her predecessors, and some of her successors, I think she did admirably well.
Buzzards gathering, to me, is more that people, including relatives, are gathering to take care of the transition of state, from one state of being into another. I do hope if she’s going to pass on that what she leaves is useful and appreciated by those she leaves things to and that there is no fighting over the passing. I am not going to compare the royal family to a pack of jackals, because that would be wholly inappropriate — I do not see them in those terms. But buzzards? That works for me.
I am also not a fan of a monarchy, other than to say that it’s a nice tie back through history and I think they’re a curiosity rather than a necessary part of the governance of countries (this goes to all royal houses around the world). I prefer a democracy or a democratic republic as we have here in America, but so long as they don’t get to dictate my life, I can enjoy learning about and seeing remnants of ruling houses, palaces and castles.
I wish Queen Elizabeth II good health and no pain if she is going to go to the rainbow bridge to join her corgis at this time, or whenever she does go there, and I am interested to read the various comments below and diaries of whatever thoughts people wish to share.
