Section 14 committee asks for reparations from the city of Palm Springs California [1]

The mostly Black and Hispanic survivors and descendants of Section 14, in Palm Springs California, have filed a claim against the city for compensation for their forced removal from their homes, without proper notification, starting in 1959 and ending in 1968. You can read the story of the evictions and the struggle for compensation here and here.

The role of the local American Indian’s, on whose land Section 14 was located, is summarized here. It was the local politicians, developers and lawyers who profited from the Indian Leasing Act of 1959 who were the catalyst for the forced removal. In 2015, the Smithsonian, in Washington DC, had an exhibit titled, "Section 14 — The Other Palm Springs." Please read here.

There are numerous other articles on the internet about Section 14 and I encourage anyone who is interested to read further.

My motivation for this blog entry is as a survivor of Section 14 and as a board member of the Section 14 Survivors Committee and I’m asking for help for the committee, the survivors and the descendants.
