I’m heading to South Dakota to visit a particular place (the Minuteman Missile Silo site) for a book I am working on. But on the way there, I decided to stop at Sioux Falls SD, partly because it’s halfway there, and partly because it has a couple places to visit that look cool.
So, some photos from Sioux Falls Park, featuring the falls on the Big Sioux River from which the town took its name.
For those who don't know, I live in a converted campervan and travel around the country, posting photo diaries of places that I visit. I am currently in South Dakota.

Walking/biking paths
The Horse Barn. Built in the 1800s.
Sioux Falls Light and Power Company. Built in 1908, it provided hydroelectric power to the city until 1974. It now houses the park’s cafe.
Queen Bee grain mill. Built in 1881, it got its power from a waterwheel on the river.
A portion of the water race used by the mill. It was later converted to power the hydroelectric turbines at the power plant.
The Lower Falls used to be here: they were dynamited and canalized for the power plant
The geology of the Falls. The lower grey rock layer is marine sediment from an ancient sea. The pink overlying rock is quartzite. The running water wears away the softer marine layers, undermining the quartzite and producing the falls.
