That third week of August was the first time I had felt that things were getting back on track.
Not normal, mind you. We’re way past that, and the more I think about it, we haven’t been fully normal as a country since Columbine and September 11th. But, truly, when the Justice Department moved against Donald Trump with all of the strength of the evidence, I was surprised to feel that sensation. What was it? Not even hope, but that sense of regaining balance once one returns to dry land.
All of that halted with Judge Aileen Cannon’s ruling for a special master.
I had a sinking feeling when I saw the top segment for Nicole Wallace’s Dateline: White House last Friday, when two out of the three A-block guests warned that the judge was entertaining this request. I got that Lucy-football feeling. And that radar was right. (Maybe that segment did what it was designed to: steel the audience for the worst.)
So here’s the danger that I see.
We already have forces on the right wing attempting to grind everything to a halt, legislatively. This helps with the accelerationism of their project, as it communicates to the populace that nothing is getting done by the normal levers. If you’re frustrated by this lack of not even progress but simple operation, you’re more likely to move into an extremist camp. Republicans are betting that this wrenching to a halt will draw more discontents into their revolutionary-reactionary camp.
We also have had enormous cynicism and frustration on the left, too, from seeing Trump skate on all of his crimes so far. Every one of them, minor and major. This too has the possibility of turning people extremist, on either side of the political spectrum. People need to see that the system works as designed. Otherwise, they lose faith in the system.
This is what I fear. Progressives were just starting to get the wind back in them and their feet set underneath. We were getting back to things working as designed—the rule of law had finally swung into action and we would finally see that, yes, things can look bad but eventually things work out if you persevere. That’s been yanked from us. I’ve seen the sentiment in several arenas, especially in the comment section at Washington Post and elsewhere. People are jumping back into the pool of frustration and cynicism.
The last thing we can withstand is for our side to lose faith in the system. All’s lost, then.
Here’s hoping the Justice Department appeals Cannon’s order.
