Winners proudly and loudly protect freedom of choice: Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan.

Today’s blockbuster poll from Survey USA and a local ABC news affiliate KSTP on the Minnesota governor’s race:

Walz/Flanagan (D) 51

Jensen/Birk (R) 33

For context, the same poll back in May had Walz up 44-39. From the newscast leading the local evening news tonight:

“The results of this current poll are nothing short of stunning,” says Carleton College political analyst Steven Schier, citing the barrage of TV ads criticizing Jensen about abortion and education funding as difficult for the Republican to overcome.

Here’s the magic. A full-court press in the first quarter with laser focus on freedom of choice. The Republican candidate DEFINED as an extreme, absolutely unacceptable option for the majority of Minnesota voters before the race really even started. This ad has blanketed the airwaves in MN for weeks and weeks.

Deciding whether to continue an unwanted pregnancy or have an abortion is perhaps the most private and personal decision a person can make. Freedom of choice and the right to privacy are deeply personal issues. So the messaging in this 2022 election and beyond needs to be deeply personal — for the Republican forced-birther candidates. This ad sets the contrast perfectly. Are we going to allow Scott Jensen in his infinite wisdom to personally force (by being the one who signs the law or provides the passing vote) a woman or girl to give birth against her will? Hell no. Are we going to vote for leaders that respect the infinitely complicated situations pregnant people find themselves in and will defend their dignity and right to choose? Hell yes. This ad, others like it, and the messaging from Tim Walz and Peggy Flanagan on choice has practically ended this race before it started. I know similar work is being done in other races but it should be a national strategy. Can we please share best practices and repeat this in states across the country at races for every level of government? Don’t wait until the airwaves are saturated with political ads and voters tune out. Invest early. Define the Republican personally as a forced birther extremist. Make it personal.
