Couy Griffin, a county commissioner in Otero County, New Mexico, speaks on June 17 outside federal court in Washington, D.C., where he was convicted of entering a restricted area during the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol.

A county official in New Mexico who was convicted of entering a restricted area during the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol must be immediately removed from office for his involvement in an insurrection, a judge decided Tuesday. District Court Judge Francis Mathew ruled that Couy Griffin, an Otero County commissioner, is now disqualified from holding public office because he violated Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment by participating in the Jan. 6 insurrection, as well as mobilizing others to also engage in the siege.

This is news that will make your week! Certainly made mine so far. Not because of my disdain for Couy Griffin and his antagonistic, shameless and criminal approach to almost anything but that there is now new recourse for dealing with such people.

For the first time since the year 1869, a judge has removed a public servant from office, using the constitution’s insurrection clause in the 14th amendment, and has barred that official from serving office ever again.

A similar approach hasn’t worked for removing Matt Gaetz and Marjory Taylor Greene for office, but Couy was arrested and convicted in 2021 for his participation in Jan. 6 coup.

Who’s next?
