Dr Oz is unbothered by incest, so long as if it is beyond first degree [1]

Jezebel recently unearthed a Breakfast Club interview with Dr Mehmet Oz himself back in February of 2014. There, Angela Yee urged Oz (R) to give his opinion to a listener who wants to discuss about someone struggling in an incestuous relationship.

Oz: If you’re more than a first cousin away, it’s not a big problem. Yee: Okay, so second cousin is fine to smash. Charlamagne: It’s so funny, cause I knew that. DJ Envy: How did you know that? Charlamagne: Cause I’m from the country! Third cousins? Oz: Yeah. It’s fine. Oz went on to give a basic rehashing of genetics with the hosts. “Every family has genetic strengths and weaknesses,” he explained. “And so the reason we naturally crave people who are not so like us is because you just mix the gene pool up a little bit so that if I had one gene for, let’s say, hemophilia, which is a classic example where you bleed a lot if you cut yourself, I don’t want to marry a cousin who has the same hemophilia gene, because the chance of our child having both those genes is much higher.” That’s fine...benign even. But then Oz kept! talking! “You know, that’s why children, girls don’t like their fathers’ smell. Their pheromones will actually repel their daughters because they’re not supposed to be together,” Oz told the hosts. “My daughters hate my smell.”

The biggest problem isn’t that Dr Oz mentioned that incestuous relationships are less strong between parents and their children because of “smell”. In his campaign, Oz remains steadfastly “pro-life”, and it is not guaranteed that he will make exceptions for abortions involving rape or incest. In fact, last May, he tried to ensure Republican primary voters of his “pro-life” credentials:

“I do believe life starts at conception, and I’ve said that multiple times," Oz, a Republican, said at the time in a tele-town hall, going on to add: "If life starts at conception, why do you care what stage our hearts starts beating at? It’s, you know, it’s still murder, if you were to terminate a child whether their heart’s beating or not." “If you want to know the actual date, it’s usually at nine weeks that the heart starts beating. Prior to that, you have cells that are starting to connect with each other but they’re not beating in the way that you would see it on an echocardiogram,” he said.

Oz’s campaign have tried to say that they support exceptions, close to the upcoming US Senate election in Pennsylvania against John Fetterman (D). In fact, a spokesperson for the campaign emailed NBC News and said: “Dr. Oz is pro-life and supports exceptions for rape, incest, and life of the mother.”

But make no mistake. Republicans are still continuing their “pro-life” crusade, and they are working to erode abortion rights, if not eliminate it completely. And even if Republicans try to moderate their position on abortion, their complacency on abortion bans in states like Texas says it all. They only seem way more panicked about their political prospects than the end of Roe. November cannot come fast enough. Keep the fundamentalist extremist bums out of office!
