Dale, the Golden Mantle Squirrel

Golden Mantle Squirrels were abundant and constantly on view at the Manzanita Lake Campgrounds where we stayed during our recent visit to Lassen Volcanic National Park.

I named two local residents Chip and Dale because they looked liked the Disney chipmunks. Chip lived under a big rock near our parking pad. About 20 yards away, Dale lived under a concrete slab holding the bear proof food box at the campsite next to ours.

The Daily Bucket is a nature refuge. We amicably discuss animals, weather, climate, soil, plants, waters and note life’s patterns.

We invite you to note what you are seeing around you in your own part of the world, and to share your observations in the comments below.

Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the phenological patterns that are quietly unwinding around us. To have the Daily Bucket in your Activity Stream, visit Backyard Science’s profile page and click on Follow.

One afternoon after returning from visiting a lava tube cave, I saw both Chip and Dale out and about. Dale was sitting outside his house and Chip was looking for something to eat. He apparently remembered where he had buried a bit of food for a future meal. It was midway between his house and Dale’s.

Chip sniffs out a buried meal

Chip digs deeper into the dirt

Success! Chip finds a nice morsel to munch

Outside his house, Dale sees Chip munching

Dale moves to get a better look

Chip munches away

Alert! Chip becomes aware of Dale and turns to watch him all the while eating his meal.

After he finished eating, Chip runs over and gives Dale a quick nip

Dale takes off running with Chip in full pursuit.

Poor Dale didn’t get anything but a bite in the butt. Chip proved he was the boss at our campsite.

This is a stark reminder that unlike “Bambi” and other Disney movies, wild animals are constantly in competition with each other for food. They can’t be friends because it’s a life and death situation to find enough food to survive.

Chip is definitely resourceful. He found a way to climb up on a table and steal a potato chip when my husband wasn’t looking. Not a healthy snack but still a few calories to keep him going for another day. The bear proof food boxes where campers are required to keep all food and coolers, also keep food from scavengers like the squirrels and blue jays.

What’s going on in your neck of the woods?
