Somebody said I need a hobby. I say I need more bookcases.

OK, awards are not the only indication of a book’s worth. We all know that, and celebrate it. But I also do enjoy some award nominee lists because there are books I easily may have missed and want to look into.

It’s all because of the Booker that I became a reader of contemporary fiction. It happened when A.S. Byatt’s Possession won the Booker. What a story! All of the stories! So, I look at nominee lists for possible undiscovered treasure.

Earlier today, two nominee lists were posted. In Canada, the Giller Prize longlist came out. This year, I’ve not read any of the nominees and plan to address that. Here are the treasures to be found:

Also, the Booker shortlist was announced. Must admit I’m cheering for Elizabeth Strout. But have also seen praise online from writers I admire about The Trees.

Have you read any of these? Or do you have feelings about awards in general? Whatever you are thinking, let yourself enjoy as many kinds of books as possible.
