I’ve been wondering for a while:
1. Who are all the election truther candidates
2. Where they are competing and…
3. What are their chances of winning
538 and ABC have just put out this super important and timely interactive feature on their website answering these questions somewhat definitively (Good job 538!). They rate each candidate in important races across the country with a scale that goes from “fully denied” to “fully accepted”. Unfortunately, the secretary of state candidates- who certify elections, often don’t have polls that can quantify their chances in these races. So, for example, I really wanted to see Mark Finchem’s chances of winning Az SOS, being that he is one of the worst election deniers, is a nut, and according to some in his own party is the “dumbest”
Mark Finchem, not his real picture but not far off- he hates ‘Morans’
“Never in a million years” would Paul Boyer, a fellow GOP state legislator, have imagined that Finchem would crush a field of qualified candidates and win a nomination to statewide office. “Mark is known as the guy that’s probably the dumbest — well, there’s a long list, but one of the dumbest — legislators in the state House,”
I perused this feature and it is really helpful, and scary. For example, in my state, PA, the Republican governor candidate is one of the most extreme in the country, in perhaps the most consequential state. Doug Mastriano’s stance is correctly stated as ‘fully denied’ And currently has a 15% chance of winning. Which is still too high.
All across the country many of these nutters are poised to win- or are already in congress. This election in part will be another installment of the slow moving coup. However, to the degree possible, Democrats and Republicans ( like Cheney and Kinzinger who have said they would campaign against election deniers) should be on the offensive in as many of these close races as possible. This is especially important as some of these candidates are scrubbing their websites and attempting to obscure their views.
So, check out the site: 538. Have a cry for our democracy if you must, get angry, and then if you can, get involved, and/ or donate to team blue, the defenders of democracy:
