Solar Update: Every bit helps [1]

My monthly trend of generation versus use; note panels came on line in December of last year

Solar energy/renewable energy means national security.

That is something I have argued with conservatives about for decades; that our dependence on fossil fuels is unwise, unconservative, and insecure.

The Oil embargoes of the 1970’s should have forced every right wing conservative to the table at that time yet still to this day they often will argue nothing needs to be done except “Drill Baby Drill”.

Now last year at the end of November we had Solar panels installed (west facing due to home layout and trees) and since then starting in March we have exceeded use and only now in the hottest month of August did we not break even.

This means I am not consuming/using electricity generated by oil/coal/gas and am a maker not a taker…..only the darkest months of December and January will this not be true.

With our Hybrid car, bicycles, and Shanks Pony (feet) we use little oil/gas anymore and our natural gas bill tends to be very low due to our high efficiency furnace and lots of good insulation.

Our footprint is small, as we all should strive for……of course Idaho Power is whining about this and wants to reduce the amount they pay us (no net metering for you) for electrical generation since Profits before Public is prevalent. This is odd since if more people install solar and use hybrids/electric in our state we would actually stop shipping $$$ to other places and Idaho would be very close to 100% renewable energy.

After all Idaho has no coal, no oil, little natural gas yet we have wind, sun, geothermal, and biogas potential far beyond what we could consume…….hydro is maxed out though.

There are many ways to generate electricity so the false meme that more electric use means more coal/oil fired plants is nonsense.

We each can do our bit, even if it is a small bit.
