Public figures today are almost falling into roles people played in the rise of Nazi Germany. Kevin McCarthy and Mitch McConnell, for example, sound more and more like Franz von Papen, the legislative leader who helped channel money from wealthy conservatives to Hitler (Krupp and Thyssen there; Thiel and Uihlein here)—and wound up dead. Romney and Graham sound like the ineffectual Weimar politicians who failed to stop Hitler, many of whom also wound up dead. Evangelical leaders who support Trump in spite of his personal immorality sound like the Catholic Center Party, which pursued its own interests (it thought) by playing footsie with the Nazis. Their church suffered terribly later on. The Supreme Court sounds like a collective version of President von Hindenburg, who gave constitutional blessing to Hitler’s moves. Ron DeSantis is starring in the role of Erich Röhm, the up-cand-coming leader of the SA who, precisely because of his success, was a threat to Hitler. He, too, wound up dead, after the Night of the Long Knives.
I don’t think many less-than-rabidly-Trump-supporting Republicans have any inkling of the danger they are in, careerwise and maybe physically, should Trump win reelection. Trump will go for the RINO’s first, and he and his lads will decide who is a RINO.
