An editorial from Der Spiegel of Sept. 3 had a clear message about the significance of a new Ukraine offensive against the Russians, for Ukraine and also Germany and Europe. Here is a summary translation.
NOW OR NEVER
Early indications seem to say that Ukrainian forces are slowly retaking territory from the Russians and cutting off Russian supply chains. It seems possible that Ukraine could retake the major city of Kerson. This could be significant enough to alter the course of the war. The capability of Russia to sustain the war would come into question. It could be a turning point for Ukraine and its Western backers. Until now the German government has always assumed that Ukrain would not be able to drive the Russians out of conquered territories. The regime of Olaf Scholz has only done the minimal necessary for Ukraine, and as late as possible. Now comes a chance to do better. Ukraine will need more and better weapons to retake territory. Until now they have received modern weapons mostly from the USA, and these are better suited for defense rather than offense. Germany has an abundance of offensive weapons. Until now, Germany has been reluctant to provide such weapons, fearing compromise of its own military strength. This is a false decision. Where should the weapons be needed, if not in Ukraine? And if not now, then when? Training is also important. The UK is training about 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers every 90 days, and Germany is training less than 100 for tank warfare. If the West wants to keep Putin in check and enable Ukraine to make acceptable peace terms, then the weakness of the Russians must be utilized, and the chance is now. Scholz needs to prove now that his support for Ukraine is more than words. To wait and hope for something to change is no option. Now it is up to Germany to help make this opportunity a turning point.
